Mobil DIOL 9 RD 40 is an older-generation, heavy-duty LMOA Generation 5 quality railroad diesel engine oil. Mobil DIOL 40 is the modern, upgraded version, formulated to LMOA Generation 7 standards to meet the severe, high-temperature demands and modified engine tolerances of newer Tier 4 locomotives

The primary physical and chemical differences include:

Thermal & Oxidation Stability: DIOL 40 offers enhanced oxidation performance and acid control compared to the legacy DIOL 9 RD series.
Alkalinity / TBN Retention: DIOL 40 provides improved Total Base Number (TBN) retention for longer oil drain intervals.
Backward Compatibility: While DIOL 40 is engineered for modern Tier 4 engines, it is backward compatible and beneficial for older locomotive engine technologies.
Silver Bearing Lubricity: Both lines feature zinc-free and chlorine-free formulations for exceptional silver bearing protection
